“That prompted three individuals to reach out to our transportation supervisor who was able to interview them here in our district today. 7), we discussed our challenges with transportation coverage that day and asked for help in identifying additional people with CDL’s that might want to be a substitute bus driver for our district,” he added. “As a district, we are adjusting our field trip and athletic event times and creating a calendar system to make sure we have the full complement of buses and drivers available to cover our routes each day. “Our drivers and our transportation supervisor have done an incredible job of combining routes and making transportation work during this time,” he said. According to Heath, there are approximately 7,200 students in the district this year. On average, there are 60 students per bus. Mentor Schools have 49 buses running routes each day. The district is one of several across Northeast Ohio experiencing delays due to a shortage of licensed bus drivers. “We have been experiencing delays in our routes over the last few weeks and are working to find solutions to those concerns Buses line up outside Mentor High School for afternoon dismissal on Oct. “Obviously, the bus driver shortage is impacting most public school districts around the area, the state and the country right now,” Mentor Superintendent Craig Heath said. Sometimes, drivers have to double up routes to make up for staff shortages. In Mentor, delays in afternoon routes have been noticeable at Mentor High School and Shore Middle School among other buildings. A shortage of licensed school bus drivers is affecting transportation for daily routes and afterschool events and that has area school districts looking for more drivers as well as alternative solutions.
